Story: Emmanuel Adu-Gyamerah
THE Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Kwame Twumasi-Awuah has commended churches for their role in shaping the morals of people in the country.
He said the relative peace the country was enjoying could be largely attributed to the good morals being inculcated in a section of the population by the various religious bodies.
Mr Twumasi-Awuah was speaking at the inauguration of a GH ¢350,000 (¢3.5 billion) chapel for the District ‘C’ branch of the Apostolic Church of Ghana in Sunyani.
It took the church about 11 years to construct the chapel, which has a seating-capacity of about 1,500 worshippers.
The MCE noted that the provision of schools, clinics, hospitals and other social amenities by some religious bodies had gone a long way to assist the government to discharge its social-economic responsibilities to the people.
He urged the churches to embrace the new educational reform by using their pulpits to educate parents about the need to take advantage of the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme, to send their children to school.
Mr Twumasi-Awuah stressed on the importance of cleanliness and charged members of the congregation to observe the clean surroundings of the chapel and educate people in their communities to observe environmental cleanliness.
Touching on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr Twumasi-Awuah urged people who had not registered with to do so in order to benefit from the scheme.
Preaching on the topic: “Temple of God,” the Principal of the church’s Bible College, Apostle J.N. Tetteh, stated that the construction of the chapel was not an end in itself, and therefore urged Christians to use their lives to spread the gospel.
The Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, called on religious bodies to embark on serious youth evangelism to redeem them from social vices such as armed robbery.
In recognition of their contribution towards the construction of the chapel, the church awarded a number of pastors and individuals with certificates. They included elders Kofi Yeboah, J.Y. Nyamekye and pastors B.K. Mensah and J.K. Basoah.
